100 years ago

History is repeating itself at Barry and Buddon camps just now. The famous pre-war Territoria­l training ground is once more getting into the full swing of the camping season, though this summer it will be only a miniature of the giant gatherings of the past. Before the outbreak of war the majority of the troops that encamped at Barry or Buddon might be classified as Officers’ Training Corps, Regulars and Territoria­ls. Today a repetition of the same order of things has come to pass.

50 years ago

Tay Week yachting at West Ferry, Dundee, really got under way last night with a keenly-fought race for the Lawson Cup. Scottish catamaran champion Ally Summers captured the trophy, but only after a recount! He finished 9 minutes 15 seconds ahead of Royal Tay Yacht Club member Alex Flett in an Osprey. By the handicap tables, Alex was the winner by a second. But it was so close that the race officers did the “manual” calculatio­ns and Ally won by four seconds on a corrected time.

Fife received a £10 million jobs boost yesterday with the announceme­nt of a massive investment by Japanese electronic­s giant Canon. The company plans a big extension of its Glenrothes plant to start production of bubble jet printers, creating 220 jobs by late next year. The plant, which currently employs 95 workers, will supply the printers for use with personal and laptop computers to all of Canon’s European sales companies. Production should reach 50,000 printers per month by December 1996.

Medical bosses at NHS Tayside have stressed patients will not be at risk after health staff voted to strike over pay. The pharmacy support workers at the health body have balloted to take industrial action due to a long running pay dispute. The staff, who are members of the Unite union, feel they have been the victims of a flawed evaluation process which will hit them in the pocket. In a recent ballot, 90% of the workers at the health group who took part voted for industrial action.
