Mystery donation ensures free taxis for key workers can go on

£1,000 cash sent in by listener after radio interview

A mystery donor has paid £1,000 in cash to ensure a Fife firm can continue a free taxi service for NHS staff and frontline workers throughout the summer.

The gesture was made to Drew Stewart, owner of Methil-based firm PSE Security, after a listener heard him being interviewed on Kingdom FM by presenters Dave Connor and Vanessa Motion.

He said: “The cash was completely unexpected but fantastic all the same and will allow us to continue the free lift service for hospital staff to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Queen Margaret hospital in Dunfermline, as well as Ninewells in Dundee until the end of August.”

The company specialises in personal security and close protection, but because of the social distancing requirements, work has dried up.

“I started offering the free lift service after hearing about a nurse in Kelty that couldn’t get a taxi to take her to the Vic,” he said.

“I funny thing is I only went on the radio after I dropped off some cakes and pastries to the presenters between lifts as I’d been listening to them talking about Greggs reopening and them being stuck in the studio.

“Dave and Vanessa contacted me and since being on the radio, the phones have not stopped ringing, with key workers needing help and members of the public offering support.

“When I opened the envelope to find the mystery donation from a listener, I was in tears. I couldn’t believe someone I’d never met could be so kind after just hearing about what we were doing.”

Drew, who runs the company with his daughter Kahra, said the money will allow them to continue supporting frontline staff in the company vehicle, which has been adapted with screens to keep the driver and passengers safe.
