100 years ago

Dundee has this year experience­d a phenomenal marriage boom. At periods during the year the numbers of marriages registered have shown a substantia­l increase compared with previous years, and the marriages during the holiday period likewise show a remarkable increase. This year no fewer than 246 holiday marriages have taken place in the city, an increase of 35 over last year. Lochee supplies the greatest increase – 40 as against 16. The total number of marriages so far in Dundee this year is 1,218.

50 years ago

Large crowds packed Arbroath High Street yesterday as HMS Condor, her burgess ticket carried proudly at the head of the parade, made a farewell march through the burgh. The occasion was the return of the burgess ticket to Arbroath for safe-keeping. It was a moment rightly described as “a sad occasion” by Sir Richard Janvrin, Flag Officer Naval Air Command. It was another big step towards the closure of HMS Condor in its present form, one that has been part of Arbroath life since 1940.

Two grand old ladies of the road have returned to grace the byways of Angus after countless hours at the hands of a pair of Forfar vintage enthusiast­s. Fittingly, the recent Glamis Extravagan­za was the venue for the reappearan­ce of a 1943 Austin three-ton canteen van, presented to the county by the then Queen Elizabeth, and a 1947 Morris furniture van used by a well-known Dundee firm, Coopers of Dundee. Their appearance was down to the hard work of Forfar duo Lyall Norrie and Ian Johnston.

St Andrews’ famous Old Course Hotel is in a race against time to complete a major extension and alteration­s by the time the Open returns to the Home of Golf in 2021. Ambitious plans have emerged for the creation of additional conference and function space, 31 new bedrooms and a penthouse on the existing west wing. New office accommodat­ion and more parking is included in the proposal. St Andrews will play host to the 150th Open Championsh­ip and the extended hotel will be a key attraction in the landmark year.
