100 years ago

Alexander Low, aged 14 years, who lives with his parents John Low, chauffeur, and Mrs Low, Ponderlaw Street, Arbroath, yesterday sustained injuries as the result of a motor accident. The boy, who is employed as a messenger, was cycling down the narrow road which leads off Montrose Road to Culloden Farmhouse. At the same time, a London motor car was approachin­g the town and at the foot of the lane the machines collided, with the result that the lad was thrown from his cycle. He escaped with injuries to his knees.

50 years ago

Some form of apology is due either from the committee of Auchterard­er Highland gathering or the Scottish Tourist Board to numerous tourists and visitors who came to the town on Saturday expecting to find the games in progress. Their inquiries as to where the gathering was being held stemmed from a notice appearing in the publicatio­n by the Tourist Board listing summer attraction­s. The “Lang Toon’s” big day had been on this date for years, but the event was cancelled as it clashed with Lochearnhe­ad Games.

Dundee has been dealt another severe jobs blow with the news that 60 people are to be made redundant at textile manufactur­er Godfreys of Dundee Ltd. The company has been involved in a dispute with members of the Transport and General Workers’ Union for several weeks over short-time working, but yesterday announced that it intends to cut 60 jobs. Godfreys employs 230 people in its three plants – Wallace Craigie Works, Old Glamis Works and Balgray Works – and workers in all three will be affected.

More barriers should be erected to prevent Travellers illegally camping on public land in Angus, a politician has claimed. Tommy Stewart’s call came as it emerged barriers will be installed at a Montrose site “plagued” by nuisance visitors in a bid to prevent illegal encampment­s. The Montrose and District independen­t councillor spoke out as another group of Travellers moved their vehicles and caravans on to the land near the town’s health centre. The group bypassed the town’s authorised camp.
