The suggestion that the atrocious quality of American whisky sent to Ireland during the war has sickened Scotsmen of liquor is made by Mr C.J. Bell and Rev J. Bailey, two officers of the Canadian Dominion Alliance, who are working for prohibition in Scotland, says a Reuter Toronto message. They claim that Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen all show increasing public sentiment against the licensed saloon and quote statements that whisky from the US is so vile it was driving Scotland to temperance.

At seven bells in the forenoon watch today – 11.30am – the Royal Navy will end one of its best-known traditions, the rum issue. The reason, in the words of the recently-retired First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Michael Le Fanu, is that “It is not appropriate to a modern instant-response navy.” From today the lower deck will get a daily ration of three 12-ounce cans of beer, which they can buy at a shilling a can. Chief petty officer, petty officers and their Royal Marine equivalents will be able to buy spirit – but not rum.

Thirty Dundee children set off on an outdoor activities weekend at Belmont Camp, Meigle, on Saturday. The trip was organised by One Parent Families Scotland and Charleston Resource Centre and included kids from the Mid Craigie, Kirkton, Charleston and Ardler areas of the city. During their stay the children took part in various outdoor activities, such as abseiling, organised by the Flying Fox Club and barbecues. The trip was an opportunity for children to make new friends from other areas of Dundee.

Plans for a £70 million waterfront student accommodation complex have been put on hold because of flooding fears, The Courier can reveal. St Andrews University wants to redevelop its blocks at Albany Park, beside the East Sands, to increase the number of rooms from 340 to more than 750. However, environmental watchdog Sepa has raised concerns, prompting the plan to be formally refused by Fife Council. The university has pledged to “revise... and resubmit” the application.
