An award-winning Fife app designed to help locals and visitors learn more about the region’s past has surpassed all expectations.

In The Footsteps Of Kings, which has been developed by Fife Tourism Partnership, has already broken the 2,000 download benchmark since its launch last summer and is said to be one of the most downloaded apps of its kind in the country.

It is aimed at families with children aged between three and 13 and allows them to interact with characters and immerse themselves in an augmented reality experience at nine locations throughout the kingdom.

The trail guides visitors along royal paths and connects them with ancient landmarks including Ravenscraig Castle, Lochore Castle, MacDuff’s Castle and Markinch Church.

Councillor Ian Cameron, Fife Council’s tourism spokesperson, said he was delighted to see the initiative do so well.

“This is a major milestone for the app and we’re delighted it’s continued to prove popular, even during lockdown,” he said.

“It’s great to see that locals have been exploring what’s on their doorstep, and how technology can integrate and enhance our outdoor activities.”

The nine Fife locations on the In The Footsteps Of Kings trail are Ravenscraig Castle, Lochore Castle, MacDuff’s Castle, Falkland Palace and Estate, Aberdour Castle, Markinch Church, Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries and Burntisland waterfront

The app also provides information on businesses nearby, including cafés, restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts.

It was developed by augmented reality company AliveLab and won the Innovation Award at the 2019 Family Attraction Expo.
