Thousands of Dundee United fans were locked out of the club’s glamour pre-season friendly against Rangers at Tannadice last night after a faulty fire alarm closed the George Fox stand. Kickoff, scheduled for 7.30pm, was delayed for more than an hour as engineers tried to repair the system, which had started sounding soon after 6.30. Fire and police officers had no option but to shut the stand completely in the interests of safety. The game started at 8.38pm, with most of the fans moved to other parts of the ground.

The results of a traffic study on one of Perthshire’s busiest roads, organised to retain a school crossing patroller, have been dismissed by Perth and Kinross Council. Methven Primary School is one of several which could see their crossing patroller axed in a bid to save the local authority money. Child Safety Methven arranged a survey of vehicles through the village along the busy A85 over June and July. Although road operator BEAR Scotland was involved, the results have been questioned by the local authority.
