Cutting the mustard
Ellie House makes the case for sunny side up
It would seem there really is a day for everything, right down to condiments. August 1 marked National Mustard Day, and you’ll even find a mustard museum in the US. If you’re not a fan of mustard on your hot dog, you can find other ways to celebrate which don’t involve your tastebuds. Mustard has sneaked its way on to the catwalk in recent years, and deserves a place in your wardrobe. Yellow need not be a tricky colour to pull off, and can in fact be a vibrant style statement.
If you’re looking ahead, it makes for a perfect autumn look, but can also be worn all year round.
If you want to ease yourself in gently, start with mustard knitwear. A chunky jumper with black skinny jeans, or tucked into a checked pencil skirt, requires minimal accessories – you can let the mustard do the talking.
Wide-legged culotte trousers could mark your return to the office or your favourite restaurant.
Depending on the weather, team with a cropped black T-shirt or fine knit.
You can even incorporate mustard into your footwear, with a simple pair of sandals. Mustard yellow is also surprisingly versatile. It’s that bit more subtle in comparison to its sunnier cousin, and suits all skin tones.
A crisp white blouse and mustard midi skirt creates a timeless look, or you can opt for a stylish wrap dress. If you’re still not sold, indulge in mustard accessories instead. Think clutch bag or simple Alice band to complete your outfit.
