100 years ago

The chief Scottish Officer of the Ministry of Labour is to visit Dundee and investigat­e the situation which has arisen owing to the large number of unemployed ex-servicemen in the city. The Ministry has been urged to at once find employment or sustenance for the ex-servicemen, particular­ly until such time as the men receive assistance from the government. The payment of £200 towards helping the more necessitou­s cases amongst the men took place in the Gymnasium in Ward Road.

Who pinched the Glenisla Games cabers? The committee organising the 101st Glenisla Highland Gathering would like to solve this mystery. Their loss was discovered when volunteers started preparing the area at Forterhaug­h. One was nearly 16ft in length, the other slightly shorter. Both had done service at the gathering for many years and lain safe beside the secretary’s hut from one games to the other. Two new tree trunks brought from a sawmill near Kirriemuir were used instead – after a last-minute trim.

A quick-thinking off-duty fireman was hailed a hero yesterday after helping to save the life of a motorcycli­st seriously hurt in a crash near Montrose. Medical experts and police praised the actions of Angus man Steve Kelly who gave vital first aid to the biker and stopped him bleeding to death after he severed an artery. For nearly three hours he used his hand, then his knee, to staunch the flow of blood from the leg wound of the injured man. Mr Kelly, on his way to do some fishing at Inverbervi­e, said he went into automatic pilot.

Fifers are bracing themselves for more disruption to ScotRail services as workers begin an “indefinite” strike. Members of the TSSA union said journeys in the Edinburgh area were likely to be affected in its dispute over who drives trains and that this will have a knock-on effect on services to and from Fife. It follows months of complaints about overcrowdi­ng, delays and cancellati­ons. Sarah Dougherty, who uses the service, said even the threat of disruption could be “the last straw” for Fife commuters.
