As the result of an accident at Wellgate Works, Arbroath, where reconstruction is in progress, Mr Alexander Mailer, jun, Dalhousie Place, of the firm of Messrs Ramsay & Gordon, building contractors, came by somewhat serious injuries. He was standing on a scaffolding superintending some operations, when a baton slipped and he was precipitated a distance of about 12 feet, alighting on a hard concrete floor. When picked up, it was seen he was badly bruised on the side of the head. Medical aid was summoned.

Dense smoke drove hundreds of people out of the immediate vicinity of a spectacular blaze in the centre of Arbroath yesterday. Large crowds of holidaymakers built up round the area of the blaze, which destroyed the Hill Street auction room and furniture store of D.T. Wilson & Sons, Ltd, the oldest established firm in Arbroath. The burgh’s main post office, next door to the auction room, was also threatened, but danger was averted by firemen. The damage is believed to run to many thousands of pounds.

Building materials from generous Tayside firms have been winging their way to Tayside Regional Council over the past fortnight to help turn a former Soviet army barracks in Latvia into a children’s home. The plan to refurbish the building was hatched after Tayside social workers visited Inchulkans home as part of a trip to train their Latvian counterparts. The home is under-heated and overcrowded and the Latvian government cannot afford to build another home. It is hoped to send the first materials out from Perth.

Pro-independence demonstrators will bring Perth to a standstill with a five-figure crowd expected to attend a three-mile march next month. The rally, organised by campaign group All Under One Banner, is one of eight taking place across Scotland this year and is one of the longest routes. Trekking from Seven Acres park in Letham, the parade will beat a path to the North Inch, with dozens of streets set to be closed off by Perth and Kinross Council. The route will be closed to all traffic and roads around it will be shut.
