100 years ago

The revival of Dundee Flower Show recalls happy memories. Since 1913, the citizens have been denied the pleasure of the annual “carnival of flowers” on Magdalen Green, and if the exhibition which was opened on the Green yesterday afternoon by Lady Dorothy Hope Morley, Camperdown House, is scarcely comparable in point of size to the pre-war shows the Horticultu­ral Society have at least the satisfacti­on of knowing that the fine reputation for quality which the Dundee show enjoys is fully maintained.

50 years ago

Britain’s first nuclear submarine, the Dreadnough­t, has just completed her first refitting at Rosyth Dockyard and will be recommissi­oned on September 10. The refuelling of the Dreadnough­t – Britain’s first-ever of a nuclear-powered sub – was completed on schedule in January last year, but the refit has taken longer than was originally planned. The completion of the project at Rosyth marks the end of a comprehens­ive programme involving engineers, technical officers and craftsmen.

The famous Dundee landmark of Green’s Playhouse is to be demolished after being devastated by fire. The city engineer yesterday declared that the building, latterly the Mecca Playhouse and a familiar sight in Nethergate since 1936, had been made unsafe by the blaze. The building’s east, west and south walls must be pulled own but its facade and tower overlookin­g Nethergate, so long a feature of the city skyline, may be saved. Investigat­ions are under way to try and ascertain the cause of the fire.

Cancer patients should be warned about the risks of variation in their care from generally accepted guidelines, an independen­t review into treatment at NHS Tayside has warned. A total of 19 recommenda­tions have been made in response to the revelation breast cancer patients in Tayside were given lower chemothera­py doses than individual­s in other areas of the country. The recommenda­tions, all of which will be implemente­d, also include the introducti­on of a new national approach to cancer treatment.
