Police investigating the death of Arbroath resident arrest man
Frankie Melvin, 34, originally from Dundee, was found dead on Wednesday
The death of a man in Arbroath has sparked a major police investigation.
A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of Frankie Melvin, 34, who lived in the town.
Mr Melvin, originally from Dundee, was found dead in Spitalfield Place at about 6pm on Wednesday.
Police cordoned off the street, along with connecting Newbigging Drive, and remained at the scene into yesterday evening.
Officers were patrolling the streets and interviewing residents, before issuing an appeal for witnesses last night.
Detective Inspector Allan Thomson of Dundee CID said it was an isolated incident with “no threat to the general public or wider community”.
He added: “An extensive investigation is ongoing and officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and surrounding streets as well as searches.
“I would ask anyone who may come across any items in their garden, for example items of clothing which may have been discarded or any other unusual items, that do not belong to them, that they do not touch these but call us immediately as they may be important to our inquiries.
“I would also ask anyone who may have been in the area around 6pm last night and who may have seen anything unusual at or around Newbigging Drive, Spitalfield Place, or surrounding area, to get in touch.
“In addition, anyone with any CCTV, mobile phone, dashcam or any other footage that they think would assist the inquiry is asked to contact us.”
Worried neighbours watched as police swooped on the area on Wednesday night.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I don’t know who was involved but it must have been bad going by how many police were there.
“It’s worrying when something happens so close to home.
“I feel for the family, no matter what happened.”
Another resident said she returned home on Wednesday evening to find the street surrounded by police.
“I was out when it happened so I didn’t see anything. I came back and police had blocked off the whole street then, later, I heard someone was dead.
“It’s quite scary to think something like that can happen so close to where I live so I’m glad I wasn’t here.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2702 of August 26. Information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
