Covid patient admitted to Ninewells intensive care unit amid outbreak
Two people being treated reportedly linked to rise in virus cases at 2 Sisters processing plant in Coupar Angus
Two Covid-19 positive patients have been admitted to Ninewells Hospital, with one in intensive care.
It is just over two months since the last remaining Covid-19 patient at the time was discharged from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as the first wave of the virus subsided.
Perth man and consultant orthodontist Professor Grant McIntyre was cheered by colleagues as he was wheeled out of ICU after spending 86 days fighting for his life.
The Courier understands the newlyadmitted patients are linked to the virus outbreak at the 2 Sisters Chicken factory in Coupar Angus.
During the Scottish Government’s daily briefing, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said 20,056 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 68 from 19,988 the day before.
Some 15 of these new cases are in the Tayside health board area, nine in Grampian, 21 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and eight in Lanarkshire.
She said there are 257 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 – an increase of eight in 24 hours.
Of these patients, two were in intensive care – no change from the previous day.
An NHS Tayside spokeswoman would not confirm any new admissions at the Dundee hospital.
She said: “Throughout the pandemic we have not commented on the number of Covid patients we have in our hospitals.”
A suspected case of coronavirus at an Angus care home has proved negative.
A positive test had been recorded at Seaton Grove in Arbroath on Wednesday as part of the routine testing programme there, but it is understood the follow-up test was negative.
Travellers from the Czech Republic and Jamaica will be required to quarantine for 14 days on arrival in Scotland from 4am tomorrow due to a significant rise in the number of cases, the government has announced.
The measure applies across the UK and the UK Government plans to add Switzerland to its quarantine list at the same time, after it was added to the Scottish Government list last week.
The Scottish Government also confirmed Cuba will be added to the list of destinations where travellers will be exempt from the requirement to quarantine from 4am tomorrow.
Scotland’s Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said: “It is important to remember that we remain in the midst of a global pandemic and the situation in many countries can change suddenly.
“With Scotland’s relatively low infection rate, importation of new cases from abroad remains a significant risk to public health. We continue to closely monitor the situation in all parts of the world and base the decision we make on the scientific evidence available.”
