Misplaced zeal has brought about the downfall of a young charwoman named Yvonne Montel, says a Paris message. She was anxious to become a typist, but had no money to pay for the necessary teaching. She saw her chance one day recently when her mistress forgot the keys of her strong-box, containing 20,000 francs. Taking the keys, the charwoman went off with the money. Yvonne was arrested in the Montmartre neighbourhood on a charge of robbing her employer.

A car almost disappeared during the Day Out With Ford occasion at Camperdown Park, Dundee, yesterday afternoon. And the staff of George McLean Ltd, who organised the event, were delighted. They hoped there would not be much left of the car, a rather elderly model, when the event was over. Enthusiasts were invited to bring tools, dismantle any parts they wished and keep them. Some brought screwdrivers, others turned up with pliers. Some, working as teams, had fairly comprehensive tool kits.

The halls of Claypotts Castle in Dundee resounded to the sound of a jazz anthem when American guitarist and composer Kirk Casey married Barbara Wing yesterday. The couple, from Lafayette in California, had obtained permission to have Claypotts Castle, normally closed to the public, opened specially for the ceremony. Mr Casey, whose grandmother lived in Gray Street, Broughty Ferry, had contacted the Church of Scotland and through them Rev Tom Milroy, who was acting locum of St Aidan’s in Broughty Ferry.

Perthshire youngsters have called for the controversial Cross Tay Link Road plans to be halted until they are made more environmentally friendly. More than 100 demonstrators marched through Perth city centre yesterday to hand a letter to the council with a list of climate change “concerns and suggestions”. They included re-thinking the link road and dedicating at least 10% of the authority’s transport budget to active travel.
