McInnes reveals McKenna exit on cards after heavy Dons defeat

-

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes expects Scott McKenna has played his last game for the club.

McKenna was left out of the squad for Aberdeen’s 3-0 defeat by Motherwell after the Dons received a “significant offer” from an English club for the defender.

Nottingham Forest is believed to be McKenna’s destination after rekindling their interest in the Scotland centre-back.

McInnes said: “I’m pretty sure they’re close to a fee being agreed and Scott is on his way down south to try and get things concluded.

“Scott was always going to move at some point. I’d prefer to speak more when it’s concluded but he’s a player with 16 caps and at the age of 23 he’s only going to improve.

“I’ve enjoyed working with him. It’s always with a heavy heart when you lose good ones.”

Aberdeen played a major part in their own downfall as Mark O’Hara and Christopher Long both netted in the opening eight minutes.

Motherwell began the weekend bottom of the Scottish Premiership but they confidently held on to their lead to make it a hat-trick of victories with Trevor Carson not having a save to make, although Marley Watkins hit the post for the hosts.

The visitors got off to a flying start in the fourth minute with a helping hand from the home side.

O’Hara netted from the spot inside four minutes after Watkins had handled Mugabi’s header following Liam Polworth’s freekick.

Long then gratefully received a scuffed clearance from Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis and had plenty of time to stroke the ball into the net.

The third came in the 22nd minute when Bevis Mugabi met Polworth’s corner with a header from six yards out and Lewis could not keep it out.
