Wrong-way driver brings terror to A92
FIFE: Police hunt vehicle which drove into face of 70mph oncoming traffic
Motorists travelling on one of Fife’s most notorious roads were faced with the terrifying sight of a vehicle heading towards them on the wrong side of the dual carriageway.
Police are hunting the driver responsible for the incident on the A92 between Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly after receiving a number of reports from other motorists, some of whom captured photographs and dashcam footage of the drama.
The vehicle could be seen hugging the central reservation as it headed east into the path of oncoming traffic, travelling at speeds of up to 70mph. Police officers conducted a search of the area after the alarm was raised on Sunday evening but found no trace of the car.
The incident happened just weeks after a man died in a collision on the Lochgelly to Cowdenbeath stretch of the A92, which has one of the worst accident records in Scotland.
Anyone with information, or dashcam footage, that could help police catch the driver should contact 101.
Police are hunting a driver who was filmed travelling the wrong way on a notorious Fife road into the path of oncoming traffic.
The incident happened on the A92 dual carriageway between Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly.
Drama t ic foo tage cap tured by o ther motorists ’ dashcams showed the vehicle going the wrong way down a slip road.
Another driver filmed the car slowly making its way along the road’s outside lane, tight alongside the central reser vation as vehicles of varying sizes headed towards it at speeds of up to 70mph.
No one was injured in the drama, which happened shortly before 7pm on Sunday.
Police were called but they have been unable to find the driver and are asking anyone with information to get in touch.
Reports first emerged on social media, with many people speculating that the motorist involved may have been confused by the Lochgelly slip road exit in the dark.
Facebook user David Green noted the driver had travelled along the central reservation for miles.
“G e tting confused is driving 50 yards down the wrong slip road, not going the wrong way at speed past hundreds of vehicles going the wrong way,” he said.
The A92 in Fife has long been regarded as an accident blackspot and the Lochgelly to Cowdenbeath stretch was the scene of a tragedy just last month.
A 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision involving one vehicle on the westbound carriageway of the main road near the Lochgelly junction.
Two children and a baby needed hospital treatment.
A man in his 20s died on the A92, b e twe e n the Bankhead and Redhouse roundabouts, in August.
The footage from Sunday night is reminiscent of a similar incident in June 2016 when a 29-year-old woman died in a crash on the M90 near Rosyth which left three others and two young children in hospital.
An elderly driver was taken to hospital after a crash on the M90 in March last year when their saloon was seen heading the wrong w ay down the northbound side of the motorway near Bridge of Earn.
Video on that occasion showed some drivers narrowly escaped being involved in a crash before the car ploughed into oncoming vehicles.
Anyone with information on the latest incident is urged to call police on 101.
