Gordon ‘will never shut the door’ on Scotland

-

Craig Gordon will not call time on his international career and admits he would “love to be back involved” with Scotland.

The 37-year-old Hearts goalkeeper won the last of his 54 caps in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Po r t u g a l in October 2018 when Alex McLeish was national team boss.

Earlier in the month, the former Sunderland and Celtic player watched Steve Clarke’s side reach the Euro 2020 play-off final against Serbia with a penalty shoot-out win against Israel and retain top spot in the current Nations League section with wins over Slovakia and Czech Republic, with David Marshall in goal and Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie as back-up.

Gordon showed his ability with an impressive performance in Hearts’ 6-2 win over Dundee in their Championship opener at Tynecastle on Friday night.

And speaking to the PA news agency at the relaunch of the McDonald’s Fun Football programme, which will see the company provide more than five million hours of free football to five-to-11-yearolds by 2022, he revealed a burning desire to get into Clarke’s plans.

He said: “The guys have been doing brilliantly, a great run of results to put ourselves in some really strong positions, in the final and looking good in the Nations League group.

“There has been some good results and it is a great time to be part of it and I would love to get back in there.

“I’d love to be back involved. The only thing I can do is go out and play as well as I can and hope to catch the manager’s eye.

“All I can do is control my part and that is to try and play as well as I can and that is what I intend to do, and if I manage to get in the squad off the back of that then fantastic.

“Some journalists have asked me how long (I will continue) and I still mention Qatar 2022 (World Cup).

“As long as I can still keep p lay ing and performing at a high level then I will always be available.

“Whether I am selected or not, I am not going to take myself out of that reckoning while I am still playing at a high level.

“There is still a few years left in the tank, hopefully.

“I will door.

“You just never know what can happen in football, injuries, loss of form down the line, you just never know, so all I can do is keep myself fit, keep myself performing well and see what happens.” never shut the
