Bale off bench to net Spurs winner

- JONATHAN VEAL

Gareth Bale announced himself back at Tottenham with the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Brighton which sent his side second in the Premier League.

Bale’s return to Spurs has been hampered by a knee injury and lack of preseason, but he made his first real impact by coming off the bench and heading in the 73rd-minute winner.

It got his side out of trouble against the Seagulls, who deserved at least a point and will be cursing VA R official Jonathan Moss for his role in the game.

Moss awarded Spurs an early penalty, adjudging Harry Kane was fouled inside the box when it looked marginal, with Kane sending the spot-kick home for his 149 th Premier League goal.

The official then ruled Brighton should not be awarded what looked a clear penalty of their own.

But Bale had the final say to ensure Spurs won at home for the first time this season and move two points behind leaders Liverpool.

●Pierre-E me rick Aubameyang fired Arsenal to their first victory at Manchester United since 2006 as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 100th match in charge ended in disappointment.

October started for the Red Devils with a home humbling at the hands of Tottenham and November kicked off with another loss to north London visitors as the Gunners ended their 13-match wait for a league win at Old Trafford.

Aubameyang put away the second- half penalty needlessly given away by Paul Pogba as Mik el Arteta’s Arsenal secured a deserved 1-0 victory against a United side that fell well short of the standards reached in midweek against RB Leipzig.

The defeat means Solskjaer’s side have failed to win in their opening four home league games for the first time since 1972-73.

● James Ward- Prowse’s master class sent Southampton into the top four as the Saints survived a late Aston Villa fightback to win 4-3.

England midfielder Ward-Prowse celebrated his 26th birthday in style with two brilliant freekicks at Villa Park to help lift the impressive Saints above Villa into third place.

He also set up Jannik Vestergaard’s opener before Danny Ings added a stunning fourth.

The visitors also had Che Adams and Ings goals ruled out for offside and Theo Walcott hit the bar.

Tyrone Mings’ header, Ollie Watkins’ penalty and Jack Grealish’s stoppage time goal gave the scoreline a flattering look for Villa.

● Callum Wilson’s double dashed Everton’s hopes of returning to the top of the table as England keeper Jordan Pickford watched from the bench.

Pickford was rested by manager Carlo Ancelotti after a turbulent few weeks, but replacement Robin Olsen could not keep out Wilson’ s 56 th-minute penalty and his late second to prevent a much-changed Toffees side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

The visitors, blunted without the injured James Rodriguez and the suspended Richarlison, rarely looked like bouncing back from their first reverse of the season at Southampton despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late goal.

● On Saturday, champions Liverpool came from behind to return to the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over West Ham.

Diogo Jota came off the bench to score in a third successive match and secure all three points for the Reds with an 85 thminute winner at Anfield.

Pablo Fornals had given the Hammers an early lead but Mohamed Salah levelled with a controversial penalty before half-time.

Recent Chelsea signing Hakim Ziyech starred in a 3-0 win at Burnley, while Manchester City recorded a 1-0 win at Sheffield United with Kyle Walker netting the winner on his 100th league appearance for the club.
