Lest we forget: Schools remember the fallen

- CLAIRE WARRENDER

Trad it ion al Remembrance Day events have been hit by the pandemic but the people of Courier Country have ensured “we will remember them”.

Poppy-themed face masks have brought a remembrance boost of more than £ 2,500 for Angus veterans.

The project took off after Forfar graphic designer Kylie Long created a mask for her RAF veteran partner David M cD ow all and posted pictures to Facebook.

It led to a flood of orders in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, when a cheque for £2,514 was presented to Legion Scotland national chairman Charlie Brown, and his wife, Margaret, the Forfar Legion branch chairman and secretary.

Kylie said the family had been overwhelmed by the response and delighted to be able to support the Poppyscotland appeal.

The masks fundraiser was a family affair involving three- year- old daughter, The a, and David’ s daughters, Darcy, 10, and Amelia, 14.

Meanwhile, the commemoration effort of youngsters at Glamis school has been appreciated by the local community.

The nursery pupils created painted poppies from plastic bottle ends which have been displayed on the fence at the St ra th more Road school for passers-by to see.

In Fife , pupils at Levenmouth Academy have been displaying dozens of poppies made by pupils in the front windows of the school, alongside the message “Lest We Forget”.

More than 100 have been made and they are also on show in classrooms and offices.

Senior pupils will lead a virtual remembrance service at the school today, which will be beamed by video link to classes to allow others to participate.

Wreaths will be laid at the school’s memorial on behalf of students and the Levenmouth community, and a minute’s silence will be held to honour those who died serving their country.

Teacher Claire Mcleod said :“L even mouth Academy cannot have its annual remembrance service and concert due to current restrictions.

“Therefore, we decided to show that we are still part of the community, and recognising Remembrance Day, by displaying the poppy in a window in every classroom of the school.”
