Spurs top table as United fight back

-

Tottenham climbed back to the top of the Premier League table by grinding out a turgid goalless draw at Chelsea yesterday.

Jose Mourinho’s men created no genuine chances but the wily Portuguese boss will hardly care about any lack of excitement on a relatively profitable Stamford Bridge return.

Spurs sat deep in two stodgy wedges , with M our in ho positively goading his former Chelsea player Frank Lampard to unpick the visitors ’ defensive lock.

Try as they might however, the Blues could not convert what chances they were able to create.

Hakim Ziyech was left with the most to rue, having blazed over from the penalty spot with time to pick his finish after Ben Chilwell’s inviting cross.

Timo Werner had the ball in the net just 11 minutes in, only for the offside flag to deny the deadly Chelsea striker.

And so Chelsea missed their own chance to top the table, having to settle instead for extending their unbeaten streak to 14 matches in all competitions.

Super sub Edinson Cavani inspired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s Manchester United to a stunning 3-2 comeback win at the death against Southampton.

Jan Bednarek’s header and a fine James WardProwse free-kick had Saints dreaming of a first home league win against the Red Devils since 2003.

But Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men squandered their twogoal lead as half- time introduction Cavani turned the match on its head, setting up Bruno Fernandes before netting a brace to secure a sensational late triumph.

It was the 10 th time that United had come from behind to beat Southampton in Premier League history – a victory that propelled them up the standings and continued their 100% start to life on the road.

Few could have foreseen this outcome when WardProwse superbly beat David De Gea shortly after sending in a smart corner for Bednarek to open the scoring at an empty St Mary’s.

Solskjaer turned to summer signing Cavani at the break and could not have dreamed of a better outcome as he provided the assist for Fernandes before clinching victory with a brace.

Wolves recovered from a serious injury to striker Raul Jimenez to record their first league win at Arsenal in more than 40 years.

Jimenez was involved in a sickening clash of heads with David Luiz and was taken to hospital having received 10 minutes of treatment on the pitch.

While his team- mates were clearly shaken by events, they rallied to win 2-1 as Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence struck either side of a Gabriel Magalhaes header to earn a deserved victory.

Brazilian defender Luiz came off the better of the two after the fifth-minute clash with Jimenez but was bandaged up and bleeding, with Arsenal insisting they followed all protocols before allowing Luiz to continue.

He was replaced at halftime by Rob Holding as Arsenal aimed to fight back and earn a point – but instead they suffered a third straight Premier League defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, Wolves left with their first league success over the Gunners since 1979 and move up to sixth in the table.

Wolves confirmed after the match that Jimenez’s injury was being assessed.

T hey posted: “Raul’s head injury is being assessed with a scan at a London hospital.”
