A prosecutor has called on jurors to return guilty verdicts against a man and woman on trial for murder.

Graeme Jessop said there was enough evidence to prove Jason Mooney, 27, and Lynn Kelly, 35, murdered Christopher Cowie at his Dunfermline home in October 2019.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard the advocate depute say the two accused took Mr Cowie’s life during an altercation.

The court heard that in the hours before Mr Cowie’s death, Kelly and another woman were trying to buy drugs but did not have enough cash to satisfy their needs.

Kelly contacted Mr Cowie because she thought he would be able to lend her money. She then left Mr Cowie’s home in Golfdrum Street, in Dunfermline, to buy the drugs.

However, she returned with Mooney and Mooney assaulted Mr Cowie, the court was told.

Mr Jessop said in his closing speech: “It is the Crown’s case Jason Mooney had Christopher Cowie in a headlock and punched and stabbed Christopher Cowie with the glass in the left thigh.

“Lynn Kelly must have seen Jason Mooney with a Stanley blade during the incident.”

Mr Jessop was addressing jurors on the sixth day of proceedings against Mooney and Kelly who deny charges of murdering Mr Cowie and stealing a number of items from his house.

Mr Jessop said the Crown case maintained Mooney was the main attacker in the incident. He added it was the Crown’s belief Kelly had also participated in the attack. He said that evidence showed that Kelly smashed a mirror over Mr Cowie’s head and punched him.

The trial continues.
