Ghostly presence

Thomas Brown of Bankfoot writes: “I found the recent article about Strathmartine Hospital and its possible haunting interesting. During the 1980s my wife and I were associate members of the Scottish Aero Club at Scone, now Perth Airport.

“We spent virtually every weekend on the airfield and, one evening, there was a gathering of many people from Perth and Kinross Council Air Service Training and the Aero Club when our new clubroom was being officially opened by the late Squadron Leader Alfred Smith, who gave a speech outlining the history of the airfield.

“During the talk, he also said that there was a ghost, seen by various people over the years, although he confessed that he had never seen it himself. I asked several longestablished employees about the ghost and they all said that they knew of it.

“Months later, I had forgotten all about the speech and the discussions, but one Sunday night, my wife and I had been in the clubroom for a committee meeting. It was a frosty but clear December night and we were waiting outside for a lift home at around 11 o’clock. I had an unrestricted view across the airfield to the perimeter fence and beyond that to open farmland and woods.

“I lifted my head and, at the perimeter fence, there emerged a figure dressed in what looked like a boiler suit or possibly flying gear. The figure was walking briskly with arms swinging, crossing over the two runways.

“At this point, I called my wife who also saw the figure. At that late hour, and with the airfield being private property, it could not be anyone out for a walk.

“I alerted the club secretary and soon a Land Rover appeared with a security guard and his dog. The guard said that the intruder would still be on the premises as the doors and entrances to the airfield were all locked. We drove round the whole area but found nothing.

“At that point, we were all convinced that my wife and I had seen the ghost. Since that encounter I have heard of two others who have also had similar experiences.”
