BT rewards workers with £1,500 bonuses

-

One of Dundee’s largest employers will pay workers a £1,500 bonus to recognise their efforts during the pandemic.

Nearly 60,000 frontline workers at telecoms giant BT will receive the financial boost.

BT has more than 1,000 staff based at its vast premises at West Bell Street in Dundee.

The group said 59,000 of its key workers will receive £1,000 in cash in June.

£500 is to be awarded in shares under its employee share scheme after three years.

The payout – costing BT £110 million – is equivalent to around 5% of average employee salary, according to the group.

BT chief executive Philip Jansen said: “Our frontline colleagues and key workers have been true heroes, keeping everyone connected in this most difficult time.

“BT has delivered for our customers through the dedication of all our people, but inevitably the pandemic hit our financial performance, like that of most companies.

“In this context, we have to prioritise and I am determined that we will do everything in our power to reward our frontline colleagues.”

Last year BT said it was looking to make a multimillion-pound move into new offices in Dundee as it committed its future to the city.

Following an internal review, BT selected Dundee as one of its key locations – which safeguards those jobs – and it is now looking to provide a “future-fit” workplace.

The firm said it would “review its property options in the city, which could involve looking for a new home for its operations”.
