HOCKEY

After an 18-month gap Dundee’s premiership duo began the new season campaign with mixed results, while Clydesdale, GHK and Erskine Stewart’s Melville were the only three top league teams to pick up maximum points. Wanderers’ revamped squad did well to claw back a two-goal deficit and return with a point from their trip north. Hannah Mitchell’s double had given Gordonians the advantage, however the match ended all square when Amy Snelle set up the perfect pass for Megan Cant before Iona Fleming fired in a late equaliser.

Grove’s youngsters were also on the road, heading for the capital where ESM began life in the top league with a narrow victory.

The goals all came early with Jordana Emerson’s opener being cancelled out by Florrie Mitchell. Amy Atkinson hit the match winner before half-time to keep the points at home.

GHK’s 4-1 result over debutants Uddingston saw them claim pole position on goal difference and Scotland striker Jen Eadie ensured Clydesdale Western were also in the mix along with ESM. Friday night’s curtain raiser between Hillhead and Wildcats ended goalless.

Grove’s second string began their national league campaign with a 0-3 loss at home to Waverley Inveresk Trinity.

In contrast it was a winning start for Perthshire who fired in three without reply at home to Granite City Wanderers.

Perthshire II and Dundee University II both registered single goal victories in Midland Division 1, with the fixtures involving the local universities postponed. Grove’s fourth squad, consisting almost entirely of schoolgirls, rattled up an excellent 6-1 win over Dundee University IIIs.
