- LINDSEY HAMILTON

Plans to bring a big wheel, an ice rink and a festive village to Dundee city centre this Christmas have been revealed

Areas including Slessor Gardens and City Square will be transformed as part of Winter Fest.

There will also be a lights display featuring DC Thomson comic characters, along with a nod to the city’s maritime past and its status as a Unesco City of Design.

Winter Fest gets under way at Slessor Gardens on November 26, featuring the big wheel, along with the chance to shop for crafts, food and drink at a mini village of wooden hut stalls.

From December 3-24, City Square will be transformed. Among the attractions will be a 3D Dundee Christmas card, while revellers will be able to cast Christmas wishes at the fountains and enjoy nightly projections illuminating City Chambers.

Organisers say a number of events will also take place throughout December.

Councillor Steven Rome, Dundee City Council’s deputy convener of city development, said: “With so much going on across the city centre, Dundee is the place to be this Christmas.

“Whether you’re bringing the kids out to see the lights and get a selfie with Pingu, or enjoying food and drinks at the Winter Fest, there’s something for all ages.

“A lot of planning has gone into making it a Christmas to remember after the challenges of the last year and a half, and also ensuring that the festivities are delivered safely.

“With a programme spanning six weeks, there will be plenty of time for everyone to come down and safely enjoy the fun.

“Don’t forget, too, that we have a great shopping offer throughout the city centre area, including lots of quirky independent stores offering those unique Christmas gifts, and plenty of great bars and restaurants.

“I’m sure we will see people from across the country joining local folk in discovering all Dundee has to offer during this festive period.”

Winter Fest marks the return of festive events for Tayside and Fife.
