HOCKEY

Only 50% of Scotland’s premier league matches went ahead at the weekend.

The Scotland/Wales series impacted on the domestic schedule while a number of players having to isolate added to the disruption. Dundee Wanderers found themselves with a day off while city counterparts Grove Menzieshill headed west.

Despite new keeper Raph Robeson pulling off a string of superb saves, including one from the spot, they found hosts Glasgow University in good form as they racked up a 4-0 win which included contributions from former clubmates Rhiannon Carr and Ciara Forgie.

With the enforced absence of the usual big hitters GHK remain the unlikely leaders with their third win on the bounce.

Elsewhere Perthshire, St Andrews and Stirling Universities were staking an early claim to be national league contenders.

A 10-goal haul against Strathclyde parachuted the Fife students into top spot on goal difference. Perthshire were no slouches either with a 6-0 score over Kelburne while Stirling’s 1-0 win over Granite City Wanderers was enough to keep them on equal footing.

At Championship level, Vicky Carver and Izzy Gray were on the mark to ensure Kinross sent CALA II back to Edinburgh empty handed, Duundee Uni posted a 5-3 win over Falkirk & Linlithgow and St Andrews Uni II shared four goals with their Uddingston hosts. The Grove II v Glasgow Uni II match was postponed.

Madras were the big winners in Midland division 1, running up a nap hand against St Andrews Uni IVs. Dundee Uni II took the points in a best of three with Wanderers II who replied through youngster Leah Gibson.

Kinross II v St Andrews III and Perthshire II against Grove III both finished at one apiece.

Grove IVs had a field day in division 2 running in eleven goals while hosts Perthshire III saved the whitewash with a single response.

Nic Tisdall (2), Jen Macdonald, Anna Macdonald gave Monarchs a 4-0 victory over Dundee Uni III while Blairgowrie accounted for Madras II with five unanswered strikes.

SQUASH

Crieff star Rory Stewart was disappointed not to make it further at the Springfield Scottish Squash Open in Inverness last week after losing a secondround defeat to England’s Nick Wall.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Stewart was eventually outmuscled by Wall in a pulsating match, with Wall coming back from the brink to win 3-2. The final score was 8-11 5-11 11-3 11-6 11-5.

In the women’s draw, Perth’s Katriona Allen lost to England’s Saran Nghiem in a close-fought battle, eventually going down 11-2 4-11 11-8 11-8. Meanwhile 18-year-old Lucy Murchie, who also comes from Crieff and was one of four wildcard entrants, was beaten 11-3 11-5 11-0 by Dutch ace Sanne Veldkamp.

England’s Georgina Kennedy claimed the women’s title after beating Grace Gear 11-0 11-3, 11-3 while top seed Sebastien Bonmalais beat Emyr Evans in the men’s showpiece game, 12-10 11-5 11-7 for his third PSA title of the year.
