CURLING

Perthshire curler Eve Muirhead pipped Edinburgh’s Gina Aitken at the Swiss Masters in Basel yesterday before losing in the semi-finals to Olympic champion Anna Hasselborg.

Muirhead and her team were chasing back-to-back Basel titles after winning last week’s Challenger in the same city. As a sub-plot, yesterday’s all-Scottish quarter-final continued the ongoing race for places in Britain’s Olympic squad, with honours even after Aitken’s rink won 5-2 in St Petersburg last month but then lost 10-2 in Basel last week. A topsy-turvy contest yesterday saw both teams count threes to leave Aitken in front, but Muirhead took control at 6-5, and although Aitken levelled to take the quarter-final to an extra end, Muirhead nicked a single there to win 7-6. Muirhead and company had little time to recover before another titanic encounter with Olympic champion Hasselborg in the semis. The Swede had earlier beaten Swiss world champion Silvana Tirinzoni, and Hasselborg added Muirhead’s scalp after threes at the third and seventh ends clinched a hard-fought 7-4 victory.

TENNIS

Arbroath’s Jonny O’Mara claimed his third ATP title after winning the Sofia Open doubles final in Bulgaria yesterday. The 26-year-old and Liverpool veteran Ken Skupski were playing their first tournament together since Sofia last year but took only 75 minutes to defeat the pre-match favourites, Austrian third seeds Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald.

Marach and Oswald had saved two match points in Saturday’s semis, but they were outgunned yesterday as the Britons broke serve three times and delivered five aces on their way to a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

It was O’Mara’s first ATP title since he and Luke Bambridge won in Stockholm in October 2018.

Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Sofia Open title with a straight-sets victory over Gael Monfils.

The young Italian, who is bidding to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin in November, did not drop a set all week and was particularly impressive in defeating Monfils 6-3 6-4.

It was a first final appearance since February 2020 for the veteran Frenchman.

Garbine Muguruza won the Chicago Falls Tennis Classic by beating Ons Jabeur in three sets.

Muguruza fought back to overcome Jabeur 3-6 6-3 6-0 and claim her ninth career singles titles.

World No 2 Aryna Sabalenka has been ruled out of next week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after testing positive for coronavirus.

The Belarusian would have been the top seed in the absence of Ashleigh Barty, who decided to head back to Australia having not been home since March.
