CLUB TO MARK ITS 64 YEARS IN THE RING

-

Dundee’s St Francis Amateur Boxing Club is set for a big night tomorrow.

The famous club, established in 1958 by Frank Hendry, holds its 64th anniversary show at the city’s Apex hotel.

Part of the proceeds are being donated to the Ukrainian Boxing Federation to support their boxers at this difficult time.

The event will also pay tribute to the sterling work done by Joe Duffy.

Club president Jimmy Marr said: “We have always sought to improve the club, both in terms of our facilities and reputation.

“Instrumental to this has been Joe.

“From coaching, refereeing, organising, to maintaining the fabric of the club, to driving boxers to events all over Scotland, no job has been too much for Joe.

“He has worked tirelessly over decades to build the club up and provide a structure and leadership for our club.

“All at St Francis owe a huge debt of gratitude to Joe. I would like to add my heartfelt thanks.”

St Francis secretary Norrie McVicar said: “Joe deserves a gold medal and I give him my thanks and appreciation.”

The show will feature boxers from St Francis, Lochee, Cain (Aberdeen) and Meadowbank taking on a Welsh select.

● Perth Railway Amateur Boxing Club held a successful show in the city’s Salutation Hotel.

Three of their six boxers won with contestants from the Glenrothes, Fauldhouse, Blairgowrie Wellmeadow, Jacobite (Nairn) and Jonesy’s (Plean, Stirlingshire) also being winners.

Two of Railway’s winners were boxers who are in the services.

Light-heavyweight Ryan Fair, who is in the Royal Navy, had a majority points win over Euan Lee (Lochee) and light-welter Lewis Henderson, who is in the Army, won a unanimous decision against Johnny Kermath (Wellmeadow).
