Tips for long-distance trips

-

We’re getting into the time of year when many people are venturing on holiday again, after months of not being able to travel. Surviving a long-distance car journey can be challenging but helpful advice on planning the perfect road trip is available.

Firstly, make sure you check your tyre pressure, oil and wiper fluid levels before setting off. Also, decluttering your vehicle is important because rubbish will inevitably start to pile up on the road. So it’s good to at least have a ‘clean slate’ at the outset.

Put together a playlist of music that everyone will enjoy. You can even sing along if you feel the inclination.

Snacks are another road-trip necessity, but try to pack some healthy food like fruits, nuts or granola bars to keep fatigue at bay, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Experts suggest that you should get out

of your car and stretch your legs every two hours. This can be planned in effectively – so time your stops for when you’re going to get meals or want to do some sight-seeing.

Driving while you’re tired is extremely dangerous because fatigue lowers your reaction time and reduces your ability to focus. It’s important to take turns when driving, to make regular stops and, especially, to have enough sleep before you get behind the wheel.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so packing an emergency kit in the car is a good idea. Although hopefully you’ll never have to use it, packing essential tools and a first aid kit is something very simple – yet it can have a massive impact should an accident occur.
