Courts salutes Siegrist as decision time looms on goalkeeper’ s future

Tam Courts has lauded Benjamin Siegrist’s performance in what could prove to be his Dundee United swansong.

Siegrist, 30, was at his imperious best against Ross County on Saturday, making two stunning second-half saves to deny Harry Paton.

It took a moment of inspiration for ex-United midfielder Blair Spittal to beat the big stopper from the edge of the box.

However, United roared back to win 2-1 and seal fourth place in the Premiership.

Siegrist, who boasts 142 appearances for the Tangerines, is out of contract this summer. His future is set to become clear in the coming days.

While boss Courts refused to rule out Siegrist extending his stay at Tannadice, an amicable parting of the ways appears an increasing possibility.

“Benji showed all of his quality against Ross County,” said Courts.

“He made big saves for us and has been a regular and consistent performer for Dundee United over the years.

“He is out of contract and, I’m sure, in the coming days there will be decisions taken, announcements made.

“But, regardless of what happens with Benji, he has been tremendous for me this season. He has been tremendous for this football club.

“Whatever happens next – whoever Benji is in goals for next season – they will be very lucky to have him.”

Of the club’s other out-ofcontract players, Adrian Sporle has announced his impending exit.

It can be fairly surmised that the lesser-spotted Flo Hoti and Max Biamou will also depart.

Kevin McDonald’s future is less clear, while it is hoped Ian Harkes and Lewis Neilson will pen new deals.

After a successful 2021/22 campaign, Courts was able to reflect upon his maiden campaign as an SPFL manager with pride.

Despite vocal naysayers at the beginning of his tenure, Courts guided United back to Europe for the first time in a decade.

The Tangerines also finished in fourth spot for the first time since 2013/14.

However, Courts was keen to share the credit.

“The reflection of the season for me – and I’ve always held this belief – is that I’m supported by a very strong-minded sporting director in Tony Asghar and owner (Mark Ogren),” he continued.

“I’ve got an unbelievable coaching staff and my relationship with the players, from the first day of pre-season, has been rock solid.

“So, even during the highs and lows – which every team has over the course of a season – I’ve always felt very well supported.

“I’ve always known that when you manage a big club with big expectations, you have to deliver.

“I’m really delighted to be able to say that we have delivered.”
