‘Jambo’ rugby star wants to sink double

-

Edinburgh stand-off Blair Kinghorn expects much of his family to choose Hampden over BT Murrayfield on Saturday.

But the Hearts fan is intent on doing all he can to make it a double celebration in the capital city later on.

Kinghorn, who played football in the Hearts youth academy before switching his focus to rugby union, will watch as much as he can of the Scottish Cup final as his boyhood heroes take on Rangers.

He will then turn out against Glasgow in the second half of the intercity double header on Saturday evening in the final game of the regular United Rugby Championship season.

Talking about the cup final, the 25-year-old said: “I’m a Jambo, I’ll be watching it before our game. The focus on the game will still be there but come on the Hearts.

“My dad’s side of the family will be at Hampden.

“My dad will be here but my dad’s side of the family will definitely be at Hampden, 100%.

“And then we will all meet for a beer because we have won both.”

There is silverware up for grabs at Murrayfield as well with Warriors 13 points ahead following the first leg of the 1872 Cup.

But there are bigger rewards on offer with the winners clinching a Heineken Champions Cup spot and the losers settling for the Challenge Cup, as well as being consigned to a trip to Leinster in the URC quarter-finals.

Glasgow prop Simon Berghan is also relishing the shootout with former club Edinburgh.

“The biggest part of this weekend is the Challenge Cup part of it, that whoever wins qualifies for it next season,” said Berghan, who moved to Glasgow from Edinburgh last year.

“It’s certainly a big motivator for us.

“Saturday-night rugby, going through to Edinburgh to play my first club where I’ve still got friends, it brings a different dynamic. I’m looking forward to it.”
