CURLING

Forfar curler James Craik and his Scotland team tasted their first defeat of the week following a 7-6 extra-end loss to Canada at the World Junior Championships in Jonkoping, Sweden, yesterday. The Scots had won their opening five round-robin games but found themselves 5-3 down after Canadian skip Owen Purcell counted three stones at the sixth end. Craik and company drew level before nudging ahead with a steal at the ninth but Purcell held his nerve to take the match to an extra end and then pounced on rare Scottish errors to nick a winning single. Scotland play Norway next after the Scandinavians also lost their perfect record yesterday, going down 8-5 to USA. Fay Henderson’s rink, including Perth teenager Holly Wilkie-Milne, produced a much-improved display against unbeaten Norway but still suffered their fourth straight defeat when losing 9-7. But Team Henderson grabbed a badly-needed win last night when they overcame Latvia 7-5.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Madras Ladies and Dundee Wanderers’ second squad doubled up on district honours when both were successful in this season’s curtain call. The St Andrews club added the KO Cup to their Midland League Championship following a cliffhanger of a final against Grove Menzieshill’s third team. Jade Milne’s set piece was the only difference at the break, however the result hung in the balance until Harriet Fleetham struck in the final minute to nail a 2-0 win for Madras. In the KO Plate Final it was clear that Wanderers – the previous week’s League Plate winners – and Grove IVs had both decided to reward their youth development players with a chance to shine. The difference in the end came down to the former having the edge in the experienced trio of Carmin Dow, Jenny Gerrard and Ruth Gamble. Gerrard and Gamble gave their team-mates a 2-0 interval advantage before Jenny Noakes and Aine Hargreaves exchanged counters. Annsia Niabi’s superb deflection was the pick of the goals with Gamble and Dow taking the score to 6-1.
