CURLING

Forfar curler James Craik and his Scotland team reached tomorrow’s semi-finals with a game to spare after trouncing hosts Sweden 11-4 at the World Junior Championships in Jonkoping last night.

The Scots lost an extra-end thriller to Canada on Wednesday – their only defeat all week – but they bounced back yesterday to crush Norway 9-2 before returning later to confirm their last four spot with that demolition of Sweden. Having already qualified, they now face Switzerland in today’s final round-robin fixtures.

Fay Henderson’s women’s team, with Perth teenager Holly Wilkie-Milne playing first, needed to beat Korea to stay in the competition but instead exited the tournament after losing 9-8 at the first extra end.

FOOTBALL

Juniors – Newburgh play their penultimate Conference B game tonight and face a long trip to take on Peebles Rovers at Whitestone Park. Things have picked up under the new management team for the Fife outfit and they will want to end the season in a positive manner to give them something to build on next season in Division Two. Burgh are likely to travel with the same squad that beat Stirling Uni but the starting Xi will be a late selection.

Luncarty can relax as they host Burntisland Shipyard, as the Perthshire side have already confirmed their First Division place for next season.

However, tonight’s visitors need two points to confirm their place, although Heriot-Watt need to win both of their games with Shippy losing them both. Luncarty boss Robbie Holden has a couple of injury concerns and will leave his selection late while Burntisland should have the same squad that were impressive winners at Lochore Welfare last week.

There are a couple of enticing League Cup quarter-final clashes tonight, none more so than the clash at Prestonfield where Linlithgow Rose host Craig Ness’s high-flying Kirkcaldy and Dysart. The Fife side booked their last eight place with an excellent win over Bo’ness Athletic at Alex Penman Park.

Kirkcaldy will travel with no fear and have nothing to lose which makes them a very dangerous opponent for a Linlithgow side that have flattered to deceive this season.

Ness will leave naming his side late, but they are expected to be along the same lines as the side

that won 3-0 at Dalkeith last week. Crossgates Primrose will be looking to add the League Cup to the Alex Jack Cup as they host Penicuik Athletic at Humbug Park.

The visitors will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of losing out on the Premier Division title to Tranent while Primrose beat Blackburn United 1-0 at home. Primrose boss Alan Campbell is unlikely to stray far from the side that won a week ago.
