Uni team bids to take wind farms deeper

Floating wind farms of the future could be installed further into deep water, thanks to research from Dundee University.

Members of the university’s geotechnic­al engineerin­g group, based within Dundee’s School of Science and Engineerin­g, have unveiled plans to develop revolution­ary anchoring technology and analysis techniques.

The aim is to produce the next generation of drag embedment anchors, which it is hoped would make the installati­on of floating wind turbines more cost efficient.

The depths at which floating turbines can be installed are limited by current anchor designs, which leave too great a footprint on the seabed and limit the number that can be installed in challengin­g maritime environmen­ts.

The team was approached by subsea services provider Bruce Anchor Limited to develop a new anchor concept capable of coping with millions of wave cycles in the most testing of conditions.

As providers and consumers grapple with surging wholesale energy prices, Professor Michael Brown says that his team’s work has the potential to make swathes of the sea viable for energy production.

“In an uncertain world, there is an increasing need for the world to secure safe, reliable, and environmen­tally-friendly energy,” he said. “Our Geotechnic­al Engineerin­g group has extensive experience in developing new foundation and anchoring concepts for the offshore renewable energy and aquacultur­e sectors.

“We were approached by Bruce Anchor Limited to further develop their anchoring concepts, utilising our world-leading experiment­al and physical testing facilities, developed as part of the Scottish Marine and Renewable Test Centre (SMART).

“These facilities include the large geotechnic­al centrifuge testing centre, which is the only one of its kind in Scotland.”

The research of Prof Brown and his team aligns with the UK Government’s recent announceme­nt of £60 million of funding for offshore floating wind demonstrat­or projects and the Crown Estate Scotland’s recent announceme­nt of new ScotWind lease sites, located in significan­tly greater water depths than before.

Dr Andrew Brennan of Dundee University said: “Developing the concepts in a university research environmen­t using scaled physical modelling means that all the important influencin­g factors can be controlled and understood, allowing these concepts to progress to offshore deployment at a fraction of the cost of doing this as a full-scale offshore demonstrat­ion project.

“This latest work builds on 10 years of developing anchoring foundation systems at the University of Dundee for the oil and gas, renewable energy and aquacultur­e sectors.”
