Ramsay set for record transfer to Liverpool

- DANNY LAW

Aberdeen and Liverpool have agreed a fee for right-back Calvin

Ramsay.

The Scotland Under-21 international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

It us understood the Reds will pay an inital fee of £4.5 million for the defender.

They have also agreed up to £3.5m in appearancerelated add-ons should Ramsay hit certain milestones at Liverpool.

It is also understood the Dons have agreed a 20% sell-on clause.

Following the signings of Darwin Nunez, for a potential club-record transfer fee of £85m, and Fulham 19-year-old Fabio Carvalho, Ramsay is expected to be Liverpool’s last arrival this summer.

Anfield boss Jurgen

Klopp views Ramsay as an understudy to English international right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The fee would be a club record for the Dons, surpassing the £3m received when Scotland international Scott McKenna joined Nottingham Forest in 2020.

The Dons received an additional £1m when McKenna helped Forest win promotion to the English Premier League last month.

The deal would also be the highest fee paid for a Scottish teenager, with Ryan Gauld’s £3m move from Dundee United to Sporting Lisbon in 2014 the current record.

It is understood Ramsay will now travel to England for a medical with the deal expected to be concluded over the next few days.

It has been reported that

Ramsay has already agreed personal terms on a deal until June 2027.

Ramsay was named Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year following a superb breakthrough season at Pittodrie.

He contributed nine assists in 33 appearances which saw him linked with several clubs, including Liverpool, Leeds United and Serie A side Bologna.

The Italian side lodged a bid to sign Ramsay during the January transfer window.

They submitted a club record bid for the player on the basis of loaning the Scot until the end of the season and only completing the deal if they avoided relegation from Serie A, which was rejected by the Dons.

English top-flight clubs including Manchester

United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, West Ham and Southampton had scouted Ramsay.

German Bundesliga outfits Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim were also keen on the Pittodrie youth academy graduate in January.

Ramsay can thrive at Euro giants Liverpool to become a “special player”, insists legend Willie Miller.

Gothenburg Great Miller believes Ramsay has all the qualities to excel for Liverpool in the richest league in world football.

However the Pittodrie great insists the hard work starts now for the teen.

He said: “Ramsay certainly has the qualities to be a modern type fullback that can play at the highest level.

“He has all the tools to be that special player.

“However it will not be a case of it being handed to him.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for Ramsay and he has to be confident enough to grab it and make the most of it.

“He has to take that confidence and ability and weld them together to take this chance of a lifetime as far as it can possibly go.”

Youth Academy graduate Ramsay has come a long way since making his Dons debut in March last year.

Ramsay made his first team bow as a substitute in a 1-0 Premiership loss to Dundee United at Pittodrie on March 20 2021.

His first start came on April 3 in a 1-0 Scottish Cup win at Dumbarton.

Now he is set for a lifechanging move to the recent Champions League finalists.
