ATHLETICS

Eilish McColgan has been forced out of this weekend’s UK Athletics Championships due to illness.

The Dundonian, 31, had been due to run the 5000 metres on her adopted home track in Manchester. But the bug that led to her mid-race withdrawal from last Thursday’s Bislett Games in Oslo will sideline her from the event, which doubles as the trials for next month’s world championships. McColgan expects to recover in time for the showpiece in Oregon but admitted she has yet to decide whether to request a double in the 5,000m and 10,000m, ahead of Monday’s selection meetings.

She said: “I still need to chat to UK Athletics about it.”

● British long jump record holder Shara Proctor has retired.

The 33-year-old won silver at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, setting her national record of 7.07 metres in the process.

She finished sixth at the London 2012 Olympics and won bronze at the World Indoors in the same year.

Proctor, who hails from Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, also has bronze medals from the European Championships in Berlin and the Commonwealth Games in 2018. She said: “This is a decision I have been thinking through for some time and it is one I am blessed to feel truly happy and content with.

“As an athlete you know when you feel the drive to continue and when it becomes harder. I have had a feeling since later 2019 and it has continued until last June when I decided to take some time off.

“Although I returned and trained through the winter until March, I am happy now to finish, it is the perfect decision and time for me now. I know it is right because I am at peace and I can happily watch a track meet and enjoy it, and not feel frustrated or sad.”
