Climate change doom merchants should open their minds over research

-

Sir, – I note that Alistair Ballantyne and Nick Cole continue to pour scorn on Dr Wardrop’s “persistence” in explaining that the principal driver of climate change is not CO2. They also continue to call into question the credibility of Dr Wardrop’s scientific references (Letters, June 28).

If they genuinely want to engage in what they call “a true science debate” on climate change they would do well to open their minds to the extensive and painstaking research by the physicist Henrik Svensmark.

Perhaps it may help them understand better that the sun’s role in cloud formation makes it by far the most dominant partner which, along with other lesser greenhouse gases, ensures a comfortably habitable planet.

They might also wish to consider the conclusions of Professor Emeritus Richard Lindzen, a recognised expert in climate science and one-time lead author to their apparently infallible UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

He has shown that their climate computer models are indeed fundamentally flawed. Out of 102 simulations (predictions) 101 have failed to match observed trends by significant margins and are therefore inappropriate for use in predicting future climate changes or related policy decisions.

I’m afraid that suggesting that such conclusions are in some way akin to Donald Trump’s US election conspiracy theory is nothing short of ridiculous.

They may further dwell on the puzzlement expressed of the geoscientist Sebastian Luning, co-author of superbly referenced book The Neglected Sun. He asked the apparently obvious question as to why is it that natural forces were able to dominate climate events in the past, but today they are believed to have become practically impotent and that somehow the role of CO2 has changed from that of a life-giving trace gas to a “pollutant” that will lead to our demise.

I fear that your alarmist correspondents will come up with their favourite dismissive, unscientific counter arguments that views similar to those expressed above are false or exaggerated which is a bit rich considering the levels of pseudo science and exaggerations perpetuated by their false prophet, Al Gore.
