Reminder over city’ s new LEZ

- BY FINN NIXON

Motorists are being reminded that most vehicles will be exempt from the Dundee Low Emission Zone when it is legally enforced from May 30.

The scheme targets older diesel and petrol vehicles in an effort to reduce harmful emissions and air pollution in the city centre.

From the end of May drivers of certain vehicles will be subject to fines for entering the LEZ.

The A990 inner ring road has been used as the boundary for the zone, which will not include the Bell Street, West Marketgait and Wellgate Centre car parks.

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson wants to get across the message that most vehicles on Dundee’s roads will be compliant.

He said: “The vast majority of vehicles are compliant and can travel into the city centre as normal.

“If you have a non-compliant car, you’re still able to park immediately adjacent to the city centre to access it and that was done on purpose.

“I think all councillors support the LEZ in principle. Clearly, it will be important to see how well it works in practice.”

He added: “I think we all want to see everyone breathing cleaner air and the zone has been well thought through.

“But there will be a need to ensure we listen to public feedback.”

Drivers who enter the LEZ illegally will receive an initial £60 fine, with this dropping to £30 if paid within two weeks.

This will impact those driving diesel cars and vans which fail to meet Euro 6 standards.

Essentially, this includes diesel vehicles registered before 2015 and petrol vehicles registered before 2006.

However, buses, coaches and HGVs registered from 2013 will be allowed to access the city centre.

Motorcycles, mopeds and electric cars are also exempt from the LEZ.

It has been live since May 2022, but a two-year grace period was introduced to help drivers adapt to the new rules.

Automatic number plate recognition cameras will help enforce the new restrictions.

LEZs will also be enforced in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, with Scotland’s first restrictions introduced in Glasgow earlier this year.

A vehicle checker is available on the Low Emission Zones Scotland website.
