Cameron determined to keep good times rolling
Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron is looking to keep defying expectations as he chases personal and team achievements.
Cameron is on the shortlist for the PFA Scotland SPFL Young Player of the Year award and will discover on Sunday whether he has won the prize.
But Saturday’s visit of St Mirren is uppermost in his thoughts as Tony Docherty’s side bid to overturn a two-point deficit on the Buddies and grab the final European place.
Cameron was the first Dundee player to sign a new contract after their Championship success and was soon joined by Docherty’s arrival and a major rebuild of the squad.
And his loyalty has been rewarded with an enjoyable campaign which sees Dundee challenging for fifth place.
Cameron said: “It was a weird start to the season because there were about four signed players and, when you are going into the Premiership, you know you are going to need a lot of signings. The manager did that really well.
“Once you have a few good performances, and the team helped me out in that, the whole confidence grows around the club and we start realising we can compete at this level.
“I am glad I have been able to compete as well. The expectation at the start of the season was survival so, if we can get Europe, if will be massive.
“It will almost go down in history because it’s been such a long time.”
Meanwhile, Rangers winger Ross McCausland vowed to continues his “fearless” approach during the season finale after his youthful vigour served him well so far.
The 20-year-old is also on the Young Player of the Year shortlist after a breakthrough campaign that has seen him play 33 times for Rangers and make his Northern Ireland debut.
“It’s an honour to get the nomination,” he said. “I have had a very hectic season, it’s been non-stop.
“I think I have dealt well with it. I have been chucked into some massive games.
“It has all come at me so fast I almost haven’t had the chance to think about it which sometimes can be better, because you are going out and playing and ultimately you are fearless because you are not thinking about it.
“The manager told me to keep being direct in my play and being fearless, so that is something I have continued to do.
“When you are young, you maybe go through a stage in the game where it’s all upwards and then you get to a point where you are not judged as a young player any more.
“So as a young player, if you are playing, all you can be is fearless and bring loads of energy to the game.”
