Cafe Comrie, Drummond Street, Comrie

-

What is it? A cute little cafe on one of Comrie’s main streets.

First impressions? We walked past the cafe while strolling through Comrie and peered through the windows, with a view to heading in for lunch. It looked enticing and five minutes later, we were inside, sat at a table. The place was pretty busy, with a steady flow of families and couples consuming coffee and cake, snacks and full-on lunches.

What did you have? As it was after 1pm and we were preparing to go on a walk up past the Deil’s Cauldron and Melville’s Monument (a bit of a climb!), we wanted to be sure we were fully fortified! I went for the coronation chicken ciabatta (£5.75), while my partner chose the soup and ciabatta special (£7.95) with a prawn marie rose filling. Soup of the day was tomato and basil. After consulting the children’s menu, our little one settled on a tuna and onion mayonnaise toastie (£3.25). With a couple of cappuccinos (£2.10 each), a bottle of Ribena (£1.50) and a chocolate brownie to share (£1.50), the bill was a little over £24.

Much of a wait? The drinks came out pronto and the food arrived within about 10 minutes or so. Pretty good, considering it was a busy Saturday afternoon in the middle of summer.

How was the food? Absolutely faultless! The ciabattas both came with a healthy side of fresh salad and crisps and the fillings were very generous. My coronation chicken used only the best cuts of meat and my partner’s prawns were juicy and succulent. His soup had a bit of a spicy basil-infused kick to it, which he loved. Our wee one’s toastie was said to be “brilliant” and devoured in minutes. Often, cafes that don’t specialise in coffee can let customers down but these ones were a pleasant surprise. Bold in flavour and with just enough froth, they were perfect. I couldn’t resist taking away one of the wonderful-looking traybakes and my brownie was fantastic.

Good for kids? The children’s menu is fairly comprehensive, plus there’s a mouthwatering selection of sweet treats.

Good for the rest of the family? Cafe Comrie is good for everyone and wheelchair access is possible. The cafe also sells a selection of gifts.

Would you go back? Most definitely.
