The Powrie Band

-

“Following the four generations of Powries photograph recently published in the column, I thought folks might be interested to see this photo of the original Powrie Band (see below), says Bill Powrie.

“There is Ian on piano accordion, Mary on piano, Wull on button key and the young Bill on the Hohner Double Ray Black Dot. Years later, I inherited the Double Ray from my grandfather Wull. Ian and his father Will feature on the four generations photograph.

“Mac Harcus was on fiddle and Hugh Macintyre was on drums.

“This photograph was taken at Bankhead Farm on the Dupplin Estate, Forteviot , where Wull was farm manager.

“I am hoping to have a photograph taken with members of the Powrie family in the old chair which featured in the four generations picture, which is still in the Laing family, descendants of the original photographer.”

Malcolm Harcus adds: “Ian would be about 16 at the time, shortly before I started getting lessons from him, and he was quite keen on the piano box.

“When he started the band after he came back from Canada, he played both fiddle and box. The original band was Ian, Bill and Mary, myself on fiddle and Hugh MacIntyre on drums. I think Bill would be about seven or eight years old when the photo was taken and it would be shortly after they came to Bankhead.”
