Double injury blow for Hegarty in defeat

-

MONTROSE 0 ALLOA 2

Montrose boss Paul Hegarty was left counting the cost of this League Cup encounter after Michael Bolochoweckyj and Chris Hegarty were carried off with what appeared to be serious injuries.

Hegarty had just committed all three of his permitted substitutes when Bolochoweckyj sustained ankle damage in a challenge which saw Alloa’s Jon Robertson booked.

Two minutes from time, Montrose were down to nine when the manager’s son sustained what is feared may be a ruptured achilles tendon.

Alloa have two wins from two games in the section and a very real chance of qualifying for the last 16 at the expense of St Johnstone or Raith Rovers.

“We played well in the first half and it was an even contest until we lost a goal at a corner-kick,” Hegarty said.

“I can’t fault my players for their attitude and application.

“We have taken on teams from higher divisions and have not got any reward, but I guarantee we will be competitive at our own level.

“We will try to take points from our final game against Cove, then it is on to the league.

“I will try to bring a couple of players in as we have had two serious injuries which will disrupt a defence which has been doing well.”

On 26 minutes, Allan Fleming saved well from Isaac Layne and Greig Spence followed up to score but was given offside.

Alloa took the lead on 33 minutes through Spence after Iain Flannigan sent a corner to beyond the far post.

It was 2-0 on 50 minutes when Layne headed in an in-swinging cross from Steven Hetherington.

Montrose were denied what might have been a lifeline on 58 minutes when a Bolochoweckyj header was brilliantly tipped over by Parry.
