ELGIN CITY 4 BRECHIN CITY 2

Brechin City manager Darren Dods bemoaned his side’s defensive inadequacies after City went down to a 4-2 defeat against Elgin City at Borough Briggs.

“We started the match very slowly and weren’t up to the pace of the game,” he said.

“I was very disappointed with our performance, and there’s no doubt that we let ourselves down.”

Elgin started brightly and grabbed the opening goal after 10 minutes when Craig Gunn was allowed time and space to run in on goal before firing a low drive past Graeme Smith.

Willie Dyer levelled matters on the half-hour mark with a blistering free-kick which took a deflection on its way into the net.

City found themselves a goal down again just before half-time when Gunn converted from the penalty-spot after Chris O’Neil was adjudged to have pulled Chris McLeish’s shirt in the box.

Elgin took the game to City after the break, and Daniel Moore took full advantage of a Gareth Rodger mistake to make it 3-1 after 60 minutes.

City had a mountain to climb when substitute Darryl McHardy glanced a header past Smith to make it 4-1 nine minutes later.

Although a late penalty conversion by Alan Trouten narrowed the deficit, Elgin ran out worthy winners.

There’s no doubt we let ourselves down. DARREN DODS
