Last-minute header breaks Rosyth hearts

-

Stewart Russell was the Kirrie Thistle hero after he scored the goal of the game in their East of Scotland Cup tie at Rosyth.

The visitors passed up a few chances in the first half, leaving a penalty shoot-out on the cards until skipper Stewart powered home a last-minute header to ensure Jim Finlayson’s side progressed to the second round.

Brechin Vics were also winners on the road, defeating Oakley 3-2 after an exciting second half.

Scott Ferries, Jordan Rausch and Douglas Crowe had given the visitors a three-goal lead and it looked like game over, but Lee Celentano pulled one back from a penalty and Ross Rennie scored a debut goal from a free-kick to set up a storming finish.

The home side also felt they were denied a stonewall penalty right at the end as Vics held on for victory.

In the all-Perthshire clash at Coupar Angus, Jeanfield Swifts cruised through 5-0.

Lee Deans scored the first and last with Steve McManus, Dan Kelly and Chris Scott the others to find the net.

The Luncarty and East Craigie clash at Brownlands Park looked set for a penalty shoot-out as it remained goalless with less than five minutes left.

However, a Paddy Deane strike and a Martin Maher penalty conversion carried the Bleachers through.

In a hard-fought encounter at East Shore Park, Newburgh lost 2-1 against Easthouses Lily after missing two penalties!

Gary Spence fired the hosts in front after 10 minutes, but Graeme Young levelled before visiting keeper Billy Young saved the first spot-kick taken by Steve Harris.

Midway through the second half, Ali Elliot scored what proved to be the winner as Young kept out a Scott Finlay penalty.

Downfield produced one of the few shocks of the day by ousting Lochee United.

It was disappointing day for the Super League hosts as they slumped to a third successive home defeat.

Their cause wasn’t helped by having defender Stephen McNally – the former Dundee and Forfar player – red-carded after 37 minutes as they failed to match Downfield’s determination.

Craig Smith headed the Spiders in front three minutes after the restart and Greg Birmingham sealed the Premier League visitors’ passage with the second three minutes from time.

After six successive defeats, Carnoustie were relieved at posting their first win of the season with a convincing 4-1 home victory over North League Kinnoull.
