Mums in Scotland spend £950.33 on average when preparing for a new baby, according to a new survey by Matalan.

Of those questioned, 61% think that they bought too much and wasted their money on useless products because they were excited at the prospect of having a baby and wanted to make sure they had everything they might need.

The survey found that an average of £198.97 could have been saved if they had known which products would turn out to be useless.

Matalan surveyed 1,000 mums to find out what they felt were the most crucial items for a new baby as well as which items are the biggest waste of money.

The least useful items were: expensive clothing, designer pushchair, changing bins, Baby DVD, air purifier, humidifier, video monitors, brand name nappies, top/tail bowl and bath stand.
