Volta charged up glory at Newmarket

Francis-Henri Graffard’s charge can claim a susccess for France

- THE FERRET

can claim another French success in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.

Five of the last 10 renewals have been won by cross-Channel raiders, and Francis-Henri Graffard’s charge looks another likely victor.

She has been relatively late to the party this term and this will be just her third start at Group One level, but her placed efforts in the best company show she is more than capable of holding her own.

The daughter of Siyouni failed to strike in three juvenile outings but notched up an early season hat-trick culminating in the Group Two Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly at the beginning of June.

That run inspired connections to make a swift return in the French Oaks two weeks later, and their faith was rewarded as Volta was beaten just under two lengths after suffering some serious interference at a crucial point of the race.

All eyes will be on Shalaa as he returns to action and preps for Champions Day in the John Guest Bengough Stakes at Ascot, but the race-sharp MEHRONISSA may be the best bet for a win.

If Shalaa is back to his very best he will be very tough to beat as he has pounds in hand of his nine rivals on official numbers. However, a 371-day absence is far from ideal and can give Mehronissa a chance of scoring a famous victory.

Meanwhile in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly tomorrow,

POSTPONED is seen as a worthy favourite by the bookmakers, who expect him to be a tough nut to crack.

The Roger Varian-trained five-yearold has headed the ante-post market virtually from day one and his victories in the Coronation Cup and Juddmonte International have seen him cement his position. SELECTIONS:
