Late heartbreak for Stars at Braehead

Fife Flyers looking to snap losing run with visit of Coventry

BRAEHEAD CLAN 3 DUNDEE STARS 1

DUNDEE STARS’ hopes of securing a win to take them through to the next stage of the Challenge Cup last night came to an abrupt end at rivals Braehead Clan.

The Tayside team were level with their Glasgow opponents until the final two minutes, when disaster struck.

Clan found the net twice to secure a 3-1 scoreline and snap a four-game losing streak in the competition.

Braehead now have five points, the same as Fife Flyers, but have a game in hand.

Dundee remain on eight points, one behind pace-setting Belfast Giants, with both clubs having played six games.

Corey Cowick had broken the deadlock after eight minutes on the power play, with Alex Leavitt and Scott Pitt assisting.

The home side fired 16 shots on Stars netminder Joe Fallon in the opening 20 minutes.

It took until the 31st minute for the visitors to count, Joey Sides slotting after being set up by Cale Tenaka and Vinny Scarsella.

The scoreline stayed the same until the final 75 seconds, when the home side found the net twice.

Matt Beca counted after 58:45 with Pitt again involved, this time with Jeff Ulmer.

And Matt Keith found the empty net after a pass from Craig Peacock following Dundee’s gamble to withdraw goaltender Fallon to give them six skaters.

Meanwhile, the FiFab FIFE FLYERS host Coventry Blaze today in Elite Ice Hockey League action at Fife Ice Arena as the sides meet for the first time in the 2016/17 campaign.

Flyers fans will see the return of former associate player/coach Danny Stewart for the first time since he took up the head coach position in Coventry.

Flyers then travel over the Forth to take on Edinburgh Capitals tomorrow in Challenge Cup action.

Flyers are looking to get back to winning ways.

Head coach Todd Dutiaume said “Losing four in a row is never ideal, and the boys are hurting from it.”

He added: “That quickly goes away with a win, and we are looking to start the weekend with a win against Coventry on Saturday.

“We have a good team here in Fife, but we are just lacking some confidence just now.”
