Rediscover table tennis, get fit and socialise at the same time

- caroline lindsay

In conjunction with Table Tennis Scotland and the National Lottery’s Awards for All, Dundee and District Table Tennis Association is offering the opportunity to play table tennis at Ward Road Gym on Wednesday mornings between 10am and 12 noon.

The sessions are aimed at mature adults who have either never played or who haven’t picked up a bat for years. The emphasis will be on combining gentle to moderate exercise with the social benefits of playing with friends. The mornings will be very informal, with time for tea and a chat, as well as playing time.

Martin Hayman of Table Tennis Scotland says: “The new session at Ward Road Gym has really taken off.

“There are so many people who have played table tennis in the past and given the opportunity want to take it up again, especially if it can be played locally. It is such a fantastic sport for all ages and abilities.

“We have a number of players over 80 years old which is great to see.

“More and more research is showing the benefits of playing table tennis for older people in terms of social, mental and physical well-being. Above all, it is just great fun to play.”

Playing improves hand-eye coordination; develops mental acuity by working on different parts of the brain; improves reflexes; burns calories, improves balance; is easy on the joints; and offers a social outlet: players get massive benefits from the social and recreational interaction which participating in a local group can offer.

Sessions cost £3. To find out more contact chairman@ddtta.org
