Last of the trams
“Continuing the theme of the 60th anniversary of the withdrawal of Dundee trams,” writes Graham Martin-Bates of St Madoes, “I enclose a photograph (see above right) of one of the last trams to operate.
“Tram number 48 was part of a convoy of six tramcars to mark the end on the late evening/early hours of October 20/21 1956.
“The photograph shows just some of the large crowd and a few appear to be participating in the tradition of placing pre-decimal pennies on the track to be bent by the tram. The final tram of the convoy was number 23.
“A week or two previously, we had been on a family day trip from our home in Perth to Dundee and I remember being taken by my father for a journey on a Dundee tram which we boarded in Reform Street.”
