Loons and City facing quickfire triple-header

Forfar and City will meet three times in 10 days as the Loons were held to a 0-0 draw in Edinburgh in the Scottish Cup second round.

With a league meeting on Saturday, the draw means a replay at Station Park a week tomorrow.

Forfar did start the brighter of the sides and were unfortunate not to take the lead after five minutes.

An out-swinging Martyn Fotheringham corner found Stuart Malcolm but his downward header was cleared off the line.

Ex-Edinburgh City midfielder Danny Denholm was a constant threat down the left side and his link up play with Jamie Bain caused problems for the City defence, the latter going close with a long-range curling attempt that was tipped over the bar.

Despite Forfar’s opening pressure, Craig Beattie should have put the hosts in front with opportunities either side of halftime, but the ex-Scotland international couldn’t make his chances count.

Veteran Forfar striker Jim Lister and midfielder David Cox both spurned opportunities in the second half but the best chance was saved for last.

The ever-impressive Bain found himself in acres of room inside the penalty area and with almost the last kick, his volley was expertly saved by Andrew Stobie to force the tie into a replay.

Forfar manager Gary Bollan said: “I think over the piece it was a fair reflection of the game.

“I felt in the first half we were in control, although Edinburgh City probably had the best chance of the half. Second half, Edinburgh gave it a go but I think towards the end we maybe should have scored.

“We are still in the cup but we have a replay to go.”
